The honest answer to "why can't I do a pushup" is almost never "weak arms." A pushup is a moving plank, and it fails at whichever link in that plank gives out first — usually sagging hips from a weak core, poor shoulder-blade control, flared elbows, your strength-to-bodyweight ratio, cranky wrists, or simply never having practiced the pattern.
Why can't I do a pushup even though I feel strong?
Because strength is largely specific to the position you train it in. You can be genuinely strong at a bench press, a lat pulldown, or dumbbell curls and still fail a floor pushup — those lifts hand you a bench, a seat, or a machine to stabilize you. A pushup gives you nothing; you supply the stability yourself, from hands to heels, while pressing.
There's also the load. Estimates of how much bodyweight a floor pushup actually moves vary with limb length, hand position and how the measurement is taken, but they tend to land somewhere in the neighbourhood of two-thirds, with more of it on you at the bottom of the rep. Take that range at face value and a 200 lb lifter is pressing well over 100 lb through a full range while the trunk stays rigid — and plenty of people who feel strong have never pressed that in that position (Sha & Dai, 2021).
Finally, a pushup is a skill, not just a strength output. Early gains in an unfamiliar movement are generally attributed more to your nervous system learning to coordinate muscle you already have than to new muscle. If you've never trained the pattern, you're probably less weak than untrained in it (Gabriel et al., 2006).
The 6 real reasons you can't do a pushup
Almost every failed pushup traces back to one of these six. Look for the one that describes you — a fix only works if it matches your actual weak link.
1. Your hips sag before your arms give out
The most common one by a wide margin. You start in a decent plank, and the second you begin lowering, your hips drop and your lower back arches. Now you're not doing a pushup — you're doing a worm. Force from your arms has nothing rigid to push against, so it leaks out through your midsection while your lower back takes load in a position it handles poorly.
2. Your shoulder blades don't control the movement
In a good pushup your shoulder blades move deliberately: they glide together as you lower, then spread apart as you press to the top. If they shrug up toward your ears or wing off your ribcage instead, you're pressing from an unstable base — which is often why it feels like your shoulders are doing all the work and your chest none.
3. Your elbows flare straight out to the sides
Flared elbows — arms making a T with your torso — cost you leverage from your triceps and chest, and for a lot of people that position is where the shoulder starts to complain. It feels like the "wide, strong" setup, but it usually makes the rep harder rather than easier. 4. Your strength-to-bodyweight ratio isn't there yet
A pushup is a relative-strength lift: what matters is your strength compared to what you weigh. Two people with identical pressing strength will get very different pushup numbers if one is 50 lb heavier. No cue fixes this one — only training and time.
5. Your wrists quit before your muscles do
A floor pushup asks your wrist to bend back toward 90 degrees under load. If you sit at a desk all day, that range can be genuinely uncomfortable, and you'll bail out of reps because of wrist discomfort rather than fatigue — a mobility issue, not a chest issue. 6. You've simply never practiced the pattern
Some people can't do a pushup for the deeply unsatisfying reason that they've never done pushups. The muscles exist; the coordination doesn't. This is the easiest cause to fix — frequent, easy, high-quality practice at a height you can handle beats occasional attempts at a height you can't.

Does a weak core stop you from doing pushups?
Yes — a weak core is one of the most common reasons a pushup fails, and the one people least expect. Your arms can only press against something rigid. If your midsection can't hold a straight line under load, the force you make at your hands leaks into your sagging torso instead of moving you upward.
There's a leverage cost too. When your hips drop, your body stops being one stiff lever and behaves more like two hinged segments — which tends to make the press harder, not easier, even though the sag feels like a shortcut. It also shifts load onto your lower back, which is why a set of sloppy pushups can leave your lumbar spine aching more than your chest.
Quick self-test: hold a forearm plank with a flat back, and stop the moment the line breaks rather than grinding to failure. If you can't hold a clean one for 30 to 45 seconds, your core is a likely limiting factor, and no amount of chest work will paper over it.
How do I fix sagging hips when I try a pushup?
Fix sagging hips by building the plank before you bend your elbows, and by raising your hands until you can hold that plank for the whole set. Run through this checklist on every rep:
- Set the position first. Hold the top of the pushup for two seconds before your first rep. If the line is already broken there, it only gets worse.
- Squeeze your glutes hard. The cue that does the most for most people: clenching your glutes tucks your pelvis slightly and quiets the lower-back arch.
- Brace your abs like you're about to be poked in the stomach — a firm 360-degree tightness, not a suck-in.
- Squeeze your quads and push your heels back. Your legs are part of the plank. Loose legs, loose hips.

- Raise your hands. If the line breaks by rep three no matter what you cue, the load is too high — move to a counter, bench, or stair where you can stay rigid for the whole set.
Away from pushups, the highest-return work is anti-extension core training: forearm planks (3 sets of 20 to 40 seconds in a good position, not a max-time contest) and dead bugs, two or three days a week. If your hips only sag on the last rep or two, that's normal fatigue — end the set there. A rep with a broken line teaches your body the wrong pattern, and it's the version most likely to leave your back sore.
Can being overweight make pushups impossible?
Being overweight makes pushups harder, not impossible. Because the pushup is a relative-strength movement, extra bodyweight is extra load on the same lift — someone 40 lb heavier is pressing meaningfully more weight for the identical rep. That's mechanics, not motivation, and it's worth naming honestly rather than pretending the movement is equally hard for everyone.
The response is the same as for anyone whose load is too high: reduce it. Elevate your hands — a wall, a countertop, a bench, a low stair — until you can press with a straight body, then walk that height down as you get stronger. Over a longer horizon both sides of the ratio can move, but you don't have to wait for that to start training the pattern at a height that fits you. One caution for everyone: pushups should produce muscle fatigue, not sharp joint pain. Stop the set if you feel pinching or sharp pain in a shoulder, elbow, wrist or back, and check in with a clinician if it persists — or before you start, if you're coming back from an injury or managing a medical condition.
Find your weak link, then train that one thing
Three short tests tell you where you stand. Do them fresh, not after a workout, and end each one when your form breaks rather than pushing to true failure.
- The plank test. Forearm plank, flat back. Under 30 seconds of clean holding is a strong sign your core is the priority.
- The incline test. Find the lowest surface where you can do 5 clean, full-range reps with a rigid body. That height is your training height — not the floor.
- The negative test. From the top of a floor pushup, lower under control as slowly as you can, and drop to your knees at the bottom rather than collapsing onto the floor. If you can't control 3 seconds, negatives belong in your week.
The hard part is that you can't see your own hips mid-rep, and the reps that matter are the honest ones — a mirror, a phone propped against a water bottle, or a free app like Pushup RPG, which uses on-device pose detection to credit only full-range reps, will all tell you more than counting in your head.
Then keep the plan boring. Train the pattern three or four days a week at your incline height, add two or three sets of planks on two of those days, throw in slow negatives if the floor is close, and drop a rung the moment a height feels easy.
