The best app to count pushups depends on which of four counting methods suits you: a camera app using on-device pose detection is the only kind that can check your depth and count hands-free, a proximity-sensor app is the lowest-friction option, a manual tap counter is the most reliable of all, and a smartwatch app is the most convenient if you already wear one. There is no single winner — below is how each method actually works and where each one breaks down, so you can choose the right one for your situation.

The four ways an app can count a pushup

Almost every pushup counter on either store uses one of these four methods, and many ship two or more of them in the same app. Understanding the method matters more than the brand name, because the method is what determines whether a rep gets counted, missed, or falsely credited.

Camera and pose detection: the most accurate, the fussiest to set up

The phone sits on the floor or propped to your side. An on-device vision model tracks either your full-body skeleton or your face and counts a rep each time those points complete a full down-up cycle. Apple-platform apps typically cite ARKit, the Vision framework or the TrueDepth camera; Android apps typically cite Google ML Kit Pose Detection or a PoseNet-style model.

What it gets right: it is hands-free, so nothing breaks your rhythm. Crucially, it is the only method that can enforce a depth threshold, which means partial reps can be excluded rather than quietly counted. Some apps add live audio feedback on your form. And because the processing is local, camera frames need not leave your device — where the app says so on its listing, which several do.

What it gets wrong: placement is finicky. Listings variously tell you to keep the device level, sit it roughly two metres away, keep your whole body in frame, or make sure your nose and eyes reach the top of the screen at the bottom of each rep. It is sensitive to lighting, background clutter, baggy clothing and camera angle. Long sets cost battery and warm the phone. And you have to be comfortable granting camera access while you train.

Suits you if: you care whether a rep was a real rep — you are chasing a number over months, competing on a leaderboard, or you know your depth gets sloppy when you are tired. If you are not sure what "full depth" even means, read how low you should actually go in a pushup first; the counting method only helps if you know the standard it is enforcing.

Proximity sensor: the lowest-friction option, with one honest limitation

Your phone lies face-up on the floor under your chest. The same sensor that blanks your screen during a phone call registers when your face comes near and then moves away, and each near-far cycle counts as one rep.

What it gets right: almost zero setup. It works in the dark, ignores your clothing and your background, and barely touches your battery. Getting low enough to trigger the sensor is itself a rough depth floor, which is more than a tap counter offers.

What it gets wrong: it measures how close your head gets to the phone, not whether your body did a pushup. Nodding or dipping your head can register a count, and a rep done with sagging hips or a piked back still triggers it. Because phone placement changes the effective threshold, "one rep" is not the same distance across sessions or across phones. Sensor behaviour also varies by device. And your phone is directly under your chest, where you may eventually land on it.

Suits you if: you want a hands-free count with no fiddling and you are honest with yourself about form. It is a good pairing with a grease-the-groove approach, where you are dropping for quick sub-maximal sets many times a day and setup time is the whole battle.

Manual tapping: unglamorous, and perfectly reliable

You tap the screen once per rep, or enter a set total afterwards. Several otherwise-automatic apps ship this as an explicit fallback mode, which tells you something: even the automatic apps know automatic detection does not cover every case.

What it gets right: it counts exactly what you tell it to. No false positives, no missed reps, no lighting problems. It works for variations that automatic detection often cannot handle — incline, decline, one-arm, rings, ring-to-chest, feet elevated. No permissions, no battery drain, no camera pointed at you.

What it gets wrong: tapping per rep breaks your rhythm, and it is genuinely easy to lose count mid-set or forget a tap entirely. It records a claim rather than a measurement, so it offers no verification and no form check — which matters the moment your number feeds a leaderboard or a challenge with anyone else in it.

Suits you if: you train variations, you are on a device the automatic methods do not support well, or you simply want a log rather than a referee.

Smartwatch counting: convenient, but pushups are its hardest case

An Apple Watch or similar wearable uses its accelerometer and gyroscope to recognise a repeating motion pattern and count cycles. Nothing to place on the floor, nothing to aim, and it folds straight into your heart rate, calorie and workout data.

The catch is structural: during a pushup your wrist is planted and nearly stationary, which is the least favourable condition for wrist-based motion detection. The watch is inferring reps from torso movement transmitted through a fixed arm, so depth and range of motion are not verified at all — and missed reps are a known complaint on at least one such app's own store listing. Accuracy varies by watch model, by wrist, and by how tight your band is.

Whether the built-in watchOS Workout app natively counts pushup reps is something we could not confirm from Apple's own documentation, so we are not going to claim it either way — check your own watch before assuming.

Suits you if: you already wear the watch every session, you train in a gym or outdoors where putting a phone on the floor is impractical, and an approximate count is good enough.

The fifth option: no app at all

Count in your head, write the number in a notebook or the stock Notes app. It is free, universal, permanent, and handles any variation and any rep scheme without waiting for a developer to support it. For most people the real bottleneck is consistency, not measurement precision — and a written log solves consistency directly. What it will not give you is streaks, reminders, progression logic, or any form of verification (Harkin et al., 2016).

Foxyfitness also lists an Android build. Treat all of those as leads to check yourself rather than recommendations from us.

How to choose, by situation

  • Total beginner who can't do a full pushup yet. Skip the counter for now. Automatic detection is tuned for standard floor pushups and often does not recognise wall or knee variations, so it will frustrate you before it helps. Start with a proper progression and log sets by hand — or use an app that explicitly counts variations.
  • You train at home, alone, and want an honest number. Camera and pose detection. It is the only method that can reject a partial rep, and the setup cost is a one-time annoyance you stop noticing after a week.
  • You're privacy-conscious. Either a proximity-sensor app (no video involved at all) or a camera app whose listing explicitly states that processing happens on-device and nothing is uploaded. Read that line on the listing before you install — the ones that do it say so.
  • You're on Android. None of the iOS-only camera counters above will help you. Pushup RPG is now on Google Play, so it is an option. The Android pose-detection apps mentioned above are others worth verifying yourself, and a manual tracker remains a perfectly respectable answer.
  • You already live in your Apple Watch. A watch app, accepting that pushups are the hardest movement for wrist sensing and the count will be approximate.
  • Your problem is motivation, not counting. Be honest about this one. If you have abandoned three trackers already, a fourth counting method will not fix it. Look for streaks with a rest-day mechanic that does not punish recovery, daily quests, or a group you are accountable to.

What no counter app can do for you

An app counts reps. It does not build your shoulders, and it will not stop you grinding out ugly reps because a number is climbing. Volume with poor mechanics is how people end up with cranky wrists and elbows. Get the form fundamentals right first, add reps second, and stop the set if you feel sharp joint pain rather than muscle fatigue — those are different signals and only one of them is progress.

And a note on the accuracy claims you will see across this category: "100% precision", "only clean reps count", "unlike other apps". Every one of those is a vendor's own marketing claim from their own store listing, including on our page. Nobody has published a controlled comparison.
